Peter Aiken, Ph.D. is an acknowledged Data Management authority, an associate professor at Virginia Commonwealth University, president of DAMA International, and associate director of the MIT International Society of Chief Data Officers. For more than 40 years, Peter has learned from working with hundreds of Data Management practices in more than 30 countries. Among his 12 books are the first on making the case for data leadership (CDOs), the first focusing on data monetization and modern strategic data thinking, and the first to objectively specify what it means to be data-literate. International recognition has resulted from these and a (pre-Covid-19) intensive worldwide events schedule. Peter also hosts the longest-running Data Management webinar series on dataversity.net. Before Google, before data was big, and before Data Science, Peter founded several organizations that have helped more than 200 businesses leverage data – specific savings have been measured at more than $1.5 billion. His latest venture is Anything Awesome.

Karen Lopez Karen is a senior project manager and architect with an extensive background in development processes and information management. Ryan Day Ryan Day is an advanced data scientist at the Conference of State Bank Supervisors (CSBS) and the author of Hands-on APIs for AI and Data Science, O’Reilly Publishing, 2025. He previously led the digital services division for a Federal agency, where he advanced cloud computing, data science and API development initiatives. He is an experienced open-source developer who participates in the FastAPI project. He holds an AWS Solutions Architect certification and is a member of the National Association of Business Economics. Ryan was a member of KC DAMA during the early 2000s and served as webmaster in 2010.

The day will start with an exciting presentation from a KC-DAMA favorite, Karen Lopez, with her presentation “Securing and Protecting Your Data for AI”. This presentation discusses the importance of data privacy, compliance with regulations, and the growing need for enhanced data security measures. Karen will have hands-on activities and lots of fun presenting in the morning and afternoon. Local KC author Ryan Day will be presenting relevant data management topics from his new book “Hands-On APIs for AI and Data Science: Python Development with FastAPI”. Periodically, it is useful to interact with your Data Governance group to reevaluate the relative value of the various collections in the warehouse. More and more organizations are using warehousing as a strategy and focusing less on the actual technology. This program will provide a refocus on warehousing as a capability that: supports BI activities, enables more effective business analyses and decision-making, and provides some contribution to innovation initiatives. What are the capabilities required and how does their operation compare to cloud-based options?

Arrival:

All guests attending the tour are required to complete a liability waiver before being allowed in the production areas. KC-DAMA will share a link with you upon sign-up, to complete the waiver online before arrival to streamline your check in process.
Please check in at our front desk no less than 15 minutes before your scheduled tour time. All tours begin promptly at their scheduled time.

Closed-toe shoes are required
Proper photo ID is required upon check-in for all guests

If you are not present 15 mins before the tour time another member will be allowed to attend in your place.

The barrel rick house is not temperature controlled and can experience high or low temperatures depending on the season, please plan accordingly

Getting There:

Rieger is near active train tracks that can occasionally block routes to the distillery. To avoid train crossings they would advise utilizing Chestnut Trafficway via Independence Avenue or Guinotte Avenue via Third Street from the River Market neighborhood. If you do run into a train coming from Front Street at Lydia Avenue you can follow the blue “Electric Park Detour” signs to redirect you to their distillery.

More than anything else, success with Artificial Intelligence depends on data and people. One cannot do good things with AI without high-quality data and one can’t ensure high-quality data without large numbers of people contributing to the effort. The first part of the claim, “one cannot do good things with AI without high-quality data” will not surprise anyone. The notion that “one cannot ensure high-quality data without large numbers of people contributing to the effort” may prove enlightening. We will discuss these ideas in a workshop, starting with some basics, moving to the unprecedented demands AI places on high-quality data, and finally to the roles of “regular people,” those who without data in their title. Mar 19, 2024Speaker: Gwen Thomas - Data Governance Pioneer Gwen Thomas founded the Data Governance Institute twenty years ago. As the primary author of its DGI framework and guidance materials (published at DataGovernance.com), Gwen has influenced hundreds of data programs around the globe. She spent 20 years working in IT shops and providing data management and data governance consulting services, before spending 10 years as an in-house data strategist for the World Bank Group's private sector arm. Much of her time there focused on translating between executives, program leaders, data governance teams, lawyers, architects, modelers, policy writers, auditors, and data quality teams. While she is a technician, her special focus is on helping non-technical teams become stronger advocates for their own needs. Currently, she provides training and advises projects through the Data Governance Institutes’ consulting arm Topic: How to Convince the Business You Solve Business Problems Business Leaders and teams have a common complaint: they aren’t confident that today’s Data Teams understand what they need and are ready/willing/able to deliver what they need. And there’s a lot at stake: Business needs the RIGHT data to drive value, insight, and innovation. Data Teams of course want to solve business problems, and they realize their employment may depend upon it. Both groups recognize the problem is not merely messaging or communicating needs, results, and impacts. Indeed, data and data environments are exceedingly complex, and they’re typically described using jargon and marketing language that is not understandable to business stakeholders who are trying to express their needs. In this highly interactive workshop, Gwen Thomas (the founder of the Data Governance Institute) flips the current paradigm. Instead of demonstrating the value of various data/tech disciplines (while using technical jargon), she introduces a completely nontechnical framework that defines and organizes data needs, along with criteria for recognizing what “RIGHT data” means. Using a real-life use case, she’ll step through a simple process that extracts and elaborates those business needs, then maps the plain language results to requirements that use descriptors/jargon that are familiar to data and IT teams. Grant got his professional start in mergers and acquisitions working first on the legal side then buy-side analysis, valuations and transition management. After roughly a decade of analyzing, valuing and transitioning hundreds of small and mid-market businesses, Grant became infatuated with market research, something that he had to work with every day. Grant determined that while valuable, almost all market research failed to address one simple, yet critical question that he needed to answer for his clients: Why are people buying this product or service from your business? With his MBA emphasis in qualitative research marketing, Grant spent the next several years experimenting with methodologies and measurement techniques that could be used to discover the emotions and motivations behind purchasing intent. After working with a nationally renowned brand analyst, Grant discovered a quant method that could be used to assess brand preferences. With that as a starting point, he and his team utilized some principals of neuroscience and behavioral economics and created a new metadata system that can accurately quantify emotional resonance. My wife and I served as missionaries in Asia and Eastern Europe for 18 years and expanded two humanitarian NGOs to meet indigenous needs. While there, I was exposed to the raw realities of human trafficking. I found its vastness, corruption, and demand overwhelming and seemingly impossible to address. Simultaneously I wondered why trafficking victims were unable to escape. During a street outreach, my colleague asked a woman forced to sell herself on the street, “Why don’t you just leave?” She responded, “Am I coming home with you? Do you have a safe place for me?” With her hopelessness seared in my mind and without a solution, we returned to the states for a much-needed break. During this time, we discovered that human trafficking is a major problem in our own communities. With up to two million people being trafficked in the United States and a lack of long-term solutions and safe homes, we founded REHOPE. On a mission to restore survivors, we opened REHOPE Farms, a 17-acre campus offering women long-term housing, therapy, healing and wellness programs, education, and lifelong support. To provide jobs, professional skills training, and reintegration into the community, we launched REHOPE Market & Cafe, a social enterprise of survivor-made products. We also opened REHOPE Youth, a campus for the restoration of victimized children providing trauma treatment, education, family reintegration, and advanced, trauma-informed foster/adoptive services. We have the only facility in the Midwest that accepts boys. Being an advocate and a strategic partner in this fight, I catalyzed REHOPE University - Center of Excellence in Counter Human Trafficking, which brings together a centralized network of professionals from legal, medical, psychological, prevention, social services, business, law enforcement, judicial, and legislative arenas. I recently stepped into the Executive Producer role and joined forces with three-time Emmy-nominated producer, Craig Martin, to create a docuseries called Knock: Peering Behind the Door of HumanTrafficking. This series is to bring awareness and create change to the growing pandemic in our own backyard.

Presentation: Data, Culture, and Leadership – The Role of Data Practitioners in Building Data Driven Enterprises Data analytics is on the tip of executive’s minds; the velocity, variety, and volume of data is both exciting and frightening. More and more organizations are facing key strategic choices about how to be data-driven and not data-bound. Leaders are challenged with re-imagining culture and building an organization where employees will understand the possibilities and limitations of working with data. Companies need to create ways for various functions (data analytics, marketing, human resources, customer service, operations, etc.) to effectively work together with a shared understanding of data. In some cases, competencies may need to be re-evaluated and certain re-skilling and training may be called for. This workshop focuses on the leadership opportunities and challenges in engaging strategically with data and the evolving role of data practitioners as guides and translators for their organizations. During this session, we will focus on defining what it means to become a data-driven business from a human capital perspective and the importance of building a workforce which is not just data literate but also emotionally intelligent and intellectually curious. We’ll explore the importance of critical thinking and link this to the notion of conducting informal cultural inventories in order to understand just how ready businesses are to become data-driven. Ultimately, we will discuss the relationship between data practitioners and organizational leadership throughout the process of building data-driven enterprises. Throughout this three-hour workshop, in small group discussion and by using practical mapping and assessment tools, participants will:

Discuss the role of hands-on data practitioners in shaping the growth of data programs in organizations
Formulate questions to help assess their organizations’ capacity and readiness for embracing data
Identify and discuss competencies, knowledge requirements and strategic opportunities for supporting data initiatives

This session will be led by Brent Never and Brian Daly from the Henry W. Bloch School of Management at the University of Missouri Kansas City Brent Never (Ph.D.) is an Associate Professor at the Bloch School and directs the new UMKC IDEAS: The Institute of Data Education, Analytics, and Science. UMKC IDEAS is charged with bringing data science to the UMKC and Kansas City region through non-credit and credit-bearing training for professionals. Brent is an expert in GIS and spatial analytics, with a focus on housing and real estate policy. In 2018, he and colleague Jim DeLisle won the Alteryx Excellence Award for their method of data merging, cleaning, and analysis. Brian Daly (MSOD) is the Managing Director of Executive Education at Bloch. Executive Education is charged with working with organizations to develop leadership talent and strengthen their capacity for continuous innovation and success. Brian is an organizational effectiveness instructor and leads numerous training and development programs. His career includes application development, database design, data architecture, information quality, and decision support for a variety of industries including manufacturing, software, education, and financial services. He has lectured to professional audiences in over 26 states, Canada, the U.K., and Australia. Professional audiences include various accounting groups, over 10 sections of the American Society for Quality, Data Warehousing Institute chapters, and database user groups. He has also lectured at numerous universities. His presentation will include the following information.... Producing decision-able information from lots of raw data often requires complex processes which must be carefully designed and architected.

This presentation looks at the gap between raw data and decision-able information. Most of the chatter about data quality focuses upon raw, granular data describing discrete events and entities inside the enterprise and around it. But for data warehouses and decision-support, data must be converted into useful information meaningful to the decision-maker.
We will look at numerous examples between raw data and derived data (“information”) which show us trends, patterns, etc. Examples come from astronomy, military intelligence, and criminology. For example, in image analysis (in the intelligence community) we see a succession of “derived” data as we move from pixels to clues about the enemy’s strategic intent. But in that progression, there is potential for error or bias. That must be understood.
As an enterprise is inundated with more data (raw, intermediate, and advanced information) the designing and population of good metadata becomes even more important. We will look at nine distinct kinds of metadata. Not all kinds are of equal importance, but we will show the value of each. The larger the organization, and the more diverse the “institutional memory”, the more important it is to properly document the data asset for broader exploitation of its value.
We will also look at how incorrect conclusions may be drawn because of mis-handling of the process to derive “higher level” information from the raw data.

Mark has designed analysis, data collection, and data management infrastructure for companies worldwide. He focuses on two types of work: the business uses of data, and guiding the construction of data infrastructure to support those uses. His presentation will include the following information.... It seems as if every organization wants to enable analytical-decision making and embed AI into operational processes. What can you do with analytics? It looks like anything is possible. What can you really do? Probably a lot less than you expect. Vendors promise easy-to-use analytics tools and services but they rarely deliver. The products may be easy but the work is still hard. Why is this?

Using analytics to solve problems depends on many factors beyond the math: people, processes, the skills of the analyst, the technology used, the data. Technology is the easy part. Deciding what to do and how to do it is more difficult. Despite this, fancy new tools get all the attention and budget.
People and data are the truly hard parts. People, because many believe that data is absolute rather than relative, and that analytic models produce an answer rather than a range of answers with varying degrees of truth, accuracy and applicability. Data, because managing data for analytics is a nuanced, detail-oriented and seemingly dull task left to back-office IT.

If your goal is to build a repeatable analytics capability rather than a one-off analytics project then you will need to address the parts that are rarely mentioned. This talk will explain some of the unseen and little-discussed aspects involved when building and deploying analytics so that you can better understand the work and what you can do to support it. How to use the modeling session to clarify and re-engineer the business.
How Active Listening affects the model and how to effectively listen to your clients.

About the Speaker Gary Rush, IAF CPF, Founder and President of MGR Consulting, Inc., attended the U.S. Naval Academy and is a former Chair of the International Association of Facilitators (IAF). He is a recognized leader in the field of Facilitation and Facilitator training, managing projects since 1980, facilitating since 1983, and providing Facilitator training since 1985; and continues to be the leading edge in the industry by continuing as a practicing Facilitator. Data Modeling in a Big Data World

The big data phenomenon expands the purpose and changes the role of data modeling. The level of uncertainty about data modeling in today’s data ecosystems is high. Most practitioners have more questions than answers:

Has data modeling become obsolete?
Does unstructured data make modeling impractical?
Does NoSQL imply no data modeling?
What are the implications of schema-on-read vs. schema-on-write for data modelers?
Do entity-relationship and star-schema data models still matter?

Data modeling is still an important process – perhaps more important than ever before. But data modeling purpose and processes must change to keep pace with the rapidly evolving world of data. This course examines the principles, practices, and techniques that are needed for effective modeling in the age of big data. You will learn:

To distinguish between data store modeling (schema on write) and data access modeling (schema on read) and when each is useful.
The elemental characteristics of data that provide a common denominator for data modeling for all types of data.
How the common denominator is used to map various kinds of databases including relational, dimensional, NoSQL, NewSQL, graph, and document databases.
When traditional logical-to-physical modeling works and when it makes sense to reverse the process as physical-to-logical.
Trade-offs between methodological rigor and discovery-driven exploration in data modeling.

Biographical Sketch

Dave Wells is actively involved in information management, business management, and the intersection of the two. He provides strategic guidance and mentoring for BI, Performance Management, and Business Analytics programs - the areas where business effectiveness, efficiency, and agility are driven. Dave consults with The Data Warehouse Institute (TDWI) to manage curriculum and plan educational events. He teaches at nearly all of the TDWI conferences and works on a contract basis as TDWI’s primary course developer. He is a founding partner and Director of Education at eLearningCurve, where he also works as a course developer and instructor, and as a board member for Certified Data Steward (CDS). Dave is a continuous learner, currently fascinated with understanding how we think, both individually and organizationally.
