LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rick-van-der-lans-2232079/Traditional general-purpose SQL database have dominated the database market for a long time. But then big data and cloud came along changing the database market dramatically. Next to general-purpose databases the market now consists of more specialized databases, such as analytical, NoSQL, translytical, graph, and GPU-based databases.
General purpose databases are good at everything, new specialized databases are developed and optimized to excel at a limited set of use cases. Additionally, cloud platforms have made it possible to develop databases that scale almost endlessly and can operate as databases-as-a-service making them highly carefree.
In this session, the differences between traditional, general-purpose SQL databases and the new generation of databases are explained.
Answers are given to questions, such as:- What are the business advantages of the new databases?
- What is the difference from a DBA perspective?
- What are the technical differences?
- Which internal techniques are used by analytical SQL databases to become more scalable?
- What does carefree mean?
- How can they simplify data architectures?
Some of the new products that will be discussed are:
- Edge Intelligence
- Google BigQuery
- OmniSci
- RedShift
- SingleStore
- SnowflakeDB
- Starburst
- Yugabyte
- and many more
This session presents an overview of the changes in the database market from a technical perspective, but everyone can learn from this session. The market is discussed from a historical perspective: how did we start and where are we now?
