Data Modeling in a Big Data World
The big data phenomenon expands the purpose and changes the role of data modeling. The level of uncertainty about data modeling in today’s data ecosystems is high. Most practitioners have more questions than answers:
- Has data modeling become obsolete?
- Does unstructured data make modeling impractical?
- Does NoSQL imply no data modeling?
- What are the implications of schema-on-read vs. schema-on-write for data modelers?
- Do entity-relationship and star-schema data models still matter?
Data modeling is still an important process – perhaps more important than ever before. But data modeling purpose and processes must change to keep pace with the rapidly evolving world of data. This course examines the principles, practices, and techniques that are needed for effective modeling in the age of big data. You will learn:
- To distinguish between data store modeling (schema on write) and data access modeling (schema on read) and when each is useful.
- The elemental characteristics of data that provide a common denominator for data modeling for all types of data.
- How the common denominator is used to map various kinds of databases including relational, dimensional, NoSQL, NewSQL, graph, and document databases.
- When traditional logical-to-physical modeling works and when it makes sense to reverse the process as physical-to-logical.
- Trade-offs between methodological rigor and discovery-driven exploration in data modeling.

Peter Aiken will be presenting ‘Triple Play - Leadership, Value & Strategy’
Peter has more than 30 years experience in Data Management and is the Founding Director of Data Blueprint, a consulting firm that also hosts educational webinars. Peter is a long-time friend of DAMA including the Kansas City chapter and we are very excited to have him come and share with us.
His presentation will include the following information . . .
Management concerns fall into broad categories:
- Implementing change that effectively improves performance
- Processing lots of information without gaining appreciable insight
- Securing real returns from technology investmentsData, of course, is at the heart of all of these and other organizational complaints. A triple play of investments in data as an organizational asset is 1) a necessary prerequisite and 2) a primary enabler - permitting management to address these troubling issues. Transformation may require some organizational discomfort. The first step is to recruit, qualified organizational talent. The second step is to significantly overhaul the manner by which most organizations seek to obtain informational value. The third step is to implement a new type of strategy - one that integrates organizational functions and IT. By approaching data management in this different way, organizations can begin to gain the leverage that they seek. This talk will address each of these topics - illustrating how this triple play of new leadership skills, revised value propositions, and a re-positioning of strategic investments can alleviate the concerns.

The data and analytics landscape is evolving at an astonishing pace. The number of ‘big data’ technology alternatives is staggering. The momentum of open-source Hadoop is undeniable. The marketplace offers the promise of next generation analytic architectures to increase analytic agility, optimize TCO and drive greater business value.
Success requires your role evolve from conventional ‘data architect’ to ‘data ecosystem architect’. This workshop provides a structure to help you make the transition. We will explore practical steps for modernizing your analytic architecture by leveraging emerging technologies and employing data architecture patterns for acquisition, integration and access. Best practices will be discussed for architecting the next generation analytic ecosystem by implementing data lakes and data products, as well as integrating heterogeneous data components, such as relational databases, NoSQL databases and open-source Hadoop. You will leave the session not only better educated on analytic architecture key themes and concepts, but armed with a practical approach for modernizing the analytic architecture in your own organization.DAMA members who have a paid membership from April 2017 through March 2018 may attend at no charge. Each serves different purposes in the business and require different methodologies and skills to perform effectively. This presentation will clarify the terminology, definitions, relationships and methodologies for each. Topics covered include: spectrum of analytics capabilities, relationships, definitions and maturity, a very different approach to solving business problems, why data scientists are called unicorns and how data science teams work. We’ll also discuss what is machine learning.

Mark Madsen is the global head of architecture at Teradata / Think Big Analytics, where he is responsible for understanding, forecasting, and defining the analytics landscape and architecture. He was formerly president of Third Nature, where he advised companies on data strategy and technology planning. Mark has designed analysis, data collection, and data management infrastructure for companies worldwide. He focuses on two types of work: the business uses of data, and guiding the construction of data infrastructure to support those uses.
His presentation will include the following information....
It seems as if every organization wants to enable analytical-decision making and embed AI into operational processes. What can you do with analytics? It looks like anything is possible. What can you really do? Probably a lot less than you expect. Vendors promise easy-to-use analytics tools and services but they rarely deliver. The products may be easy but the work is still hard. Why is this?
- Using analytics to solve problems depends on many factors beyond the math: people, processes, the skills of the analyst, the technology used, the data. Technology is the easy part. Deciding what to do and how to do it is more difficult. Despite this, fancy new tools get all the attention and budget.
- People and data are the truly hard parts. People, because many believe that data is absolute rather than relative, and that analytic models produce an answer rather than a range of answers with varying degrees of truth, accuracy and applicability. Data, because managing data for analytics is a nuanced, detail-oriented and seemingly dull task left to back-office IT.
If your goal is to build a repeatable analytics capability rather than a one-off analytics project then you will need to address the parts that are rarely mentioned. This talk will explain some of the unseen and little-discussed aspects involved when building and deploying analytics so that you can better understand the work and what you can do to support it.

Michael Scofield, M.B.A. is an Assistant Professor at Loma Linda University. His career includes application development, database design, data architecture, information quality, and decision support for a variety of industries including manufacturing, software, education, and financial services. He has lectured to professional audiences in over 26 states, Canada, the U.K., and Australia. Professional audiences include various accounting groups, over 10 sections of the American Society for Quality, Data Warehousing Institute chapters, and database user groups. He has also lectured at numerous universities.
His presentation will include the following information....
Producing decision-able information from lots of raw data often requires complex processes which must be carefully designed and architected.- This presentation looks at the gap between raw data and decision-able information. Most of the chatter about data quality focuses upon raw, granular data describing discrete events and entities inside the enterprise and around it. But for data warehouses and decision-support, data must be converted into useful information meaningful to the decision-maker.
- We will look at numerous examples between raw data and derived data (“information”) which show us trends, patterns, etc. Examples come from astronomy, military intelligence, and criminology. For example, in image analysis (in the intelligence community) we see a succession of “derived” data as we move from pixels to clues about the enemy’s strategic intent. But in that progression, there is potential for error or bias. That must be understood.
- As an enterprise is inundated with more data (raw, intermediate, and advanced information) the designing and population of good metadata becomes even more important. We will look at nine distinct kinds of metadata. Not all kinds are of equal importance, but we will show the value of each. The larger the organization, and the more diverse the “institutional memory”, the more important it is to properly document the data asset for broader exploitation of its value.
- We will also look at how incorrect conclusions may be drawn because of mis-handling of the process to derive “higher level” information from the raw data.

Presentation: The Modern Data Warehouse
We live in the age of information and the Internet. Our expectations to any information are at the speed of “google” and the availability of information for use, and ease of “Facebook” for analysis. So, what happens to the world of data and the knowledge of analytics? Where do we go for a solution? Do we need a Data Warehouse? Is it dead? Are we living a non-existent dream? Is the cloud the right answer for this situation? Are these issues or thoughts bothering you? This session is a discussion about the modern data warehouse. The new age of information and its flexibility brings to us a new ecosystem and we need to understand how to leverage the same. We will discuss distributed data processing architecture, the richness it provides to data and the flexibility of the architecture in implementations. How do you benefit from the modern data warehouse and its ecosystem to the corporate consumer and how do you deliver business value is the core focus of the discussion? We will discuss the new ecosystem in the session, talk about machine learning, neural networks, advanced analytics, cloud, low-code applications and more.

Presentation: Introduction to DataOps - Intelligent and Automated Data Operations
Agile data management has become a necessity for organizations that need to maximize the value of their data. Demand for data outstrips the capacity of IT organizations and data engineering teams to deliver. New data management practices that adapt the practices DevOps to support data operations (DataOps) are the key to agility in data management. Most organizations don’t reap the benefits of data science. They can’t deliver data quickly enough, they can’t hire enough data engineers, and the analytic models that they build are infrequently operationalized. Data delivery is the bottleneck. To keep up with the growing demand for data and information we need DataOps—a new approach to developing and delivering data pipelines and analytic models.
You Will Learn:
- The defining characteristics of DataOps.
- The value proposition for DataOps.
- The processes and challenges of data and analytics development and operations.
- DataOps processes and methods to overcome development and operations challenges.
- Key technologies and how they work to enable Intelligent Data Operations.
- Tips and recommendations to start your journey to the future of data management and data science with DataOps.

Speaker: Brian Daly and Brent Never from UMKC
- Brian Daly is the Managing Director of Executive Education at Bloch, UMKC
- Brent Never is the Associate Professor at the Bloch School and director of the new UMKC IDEAS: The Institute of Data Education, Analytics, and Science, UMKC
Presentation: Data, Culture, and Leadership – The Role of Data Practitioners in Building Data Driven Enterprises
Data analytics is on the tip of executive’s minds; the velocity, variety, and volume of data is both exciting and frightening. More and more organizations are facing key strategic choices about how to be data-driven and not data-bound. Leaders are challenged with re-imagining culture and building an organization where employees will understand the possibilities and limitations of working with data. Companies need to create ways for various functions (data analytics, marketing, human resources, customer service, operations, etc.) to effectively work together with a shared understanding of data. In some cases, competencies may need to be re-evaluated and certain re-skilling and training may be called for.
This workshop focuses on the leadership opportunities and challenges in engaging strategically with data and the evolving role of data practitioners as guides and translators for their organizations. During this session, we will focus on defining what it means to become a data-driven business from a human capital perspective and the importance of building a workforce which is not just data literate but also emotionally intelligent and intellectually curious. We’ll explore the importance of critical thinking and link this to the notion of conducting informal cultural inventories in order to understand just how ready businesses are to become data-driven. Ultimately, we will discuss the relationship between data practitioners and organizational leadership throughout the process of building data-driven enterprises.
Throughout this three-hour workshop, in small group discussion and by using practical mapping and assessment tools, participants will:
- Discuss the role of hands-on data practitioners in shaping the growth of data programs in organizations
- Formulate questions to help assess their organizations’ capacity and readiness for embracing data
- Identify and discuss competencies, knowledge requirements and strategic opportunities for supporting data initiatives
This session will be led by Brent Never and Brian Daly from the Henry W. Bloch School of Management at the University of Missouri Kansas City
Brent Never (Ph.D.) is an Associate Professor at the Bloch School and directs the new UMKC IDEAS: The Institute of Data Education, Analytics, and Science. UMKC IDEAS is charged with bringing data science to the UMKC and Kansas City region through non-credit and credit-bearing training for professionals. Brent is an expert in GIS and spatial analytics, with a focus on housing and real estate policy. In 2018, he and colleague Jim DeLisle won the Alteryx Excellence Award for their method of data merging, cleaning, and analysis.
Brian Daly (MSOD) is the Managing Director of Executive Education at Bloch. Executive Education is charged with working with organizations to develop leadership talent and strengthen their capacity for continuous innovation and success. Brian is an organizational effectiveness instructor and leads numerous training and development programs. Prior to joining the Bloch School, Brian directed professional education offerings at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and worked with clients from around the world.

- Time: 12:30PM-4:30PM
- Where: Virtual Event
Speaker Bio
Bernie coaches businesses to develop meaningful KPIs and present their management information in the clearest possible way to support good decision making.
Frustrated by the random way in which performance measures are often chosen and implemented, Bernie set up Made to Measure KPIs in 2007. The goal was to develop simple, structured and repeatable ways to create KPIs that normal humans could design and use to improve businesses.
Using the experience (and scars) of working with a huge variety of organizations over his consulting career, spanning banking (HSBC, Credit Suisse, UBS), aerospace (Airbus, AirTanker, Leonardo), and even cheesemaking, Bernie has boiled that experience down into simple, sensible and practical advice on performance measurement. He is the author of 19 KPI books that aim to share that expertise in a down-to-earth, conversational, style.Bernie lives in Sheffield, UK, with his wife and two children and some underused exercise equipment.

The New Generation of Databases - From Traditional SQL via NoSQL to Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS) – Virtual Course
Rick van der Lans is a highly-respected independent analyst, consultant, author, and internationally acclaimed lecturer specializing in data architectures, data warehousing, business intelligence, big data, and database technology.
He has presented countless seminars, webinars, and keynotes at industry-leading conferences. He assists clients worldwide with designing new data architectures. Rick has written hundreds of articles, blogs, books, and educational white papers. His books have been translated into several languages with more than 100,000 copies sold. In 2018 he was selected the sixth most influential BI analyst worldwide by onalytica.com. He has been a DBA for DB2 on the mainframe and for Oracle.
You can find out more about Rick and what he does at: https://www.r20.nl/index.html
LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rick-van-der-lans-2232079/Traditional general-purpose SQL database have dominated the database market for a long time. But then big data and cloud came along changing the database market dramatically. Next to general-purpose databases the market now consists of more specialized databases, such as analytical, NoSQL, translytical, graph, and GPU-based databases.
General purpose databases are good at everything, new specialized databases are developed and optimized to excel at a limited set of use cases. Additionally, cloud platforms have made it possible to develop databases that scale almost endlessly and can operate as databases-as-a-service making them highly carefree.
In this session, the differences between traditional, general-purpose SQL databases and the new generation of databases are explained.
Answers are given to questions, such as:- What are the business advantages of the new databases?
- What is the difference from a DBA perspective?
- What are the technical differences?
- Which internal techniques are used by analytical SQL databases to become more scalable?
- What does carefree mean?
- How can they simplify data architectures?
Some of the new products that will be discussed are:
- Edge Intelligence
- Google BigQuery
- OmniSci
- RedShift
- SingleStore
- SnowflakeDB
- Starburst
- Yugabyte
- and many more
This session presents an overview of the changes in the database market from a technical perspective, but everyone can learn from this session. The market is discussed from a historical perspective: how did we start and where are we now?
Guests are welcome to attend for a $35 fee and can submit payment here.
We have special rates for students and unemployed, please contact RSVP@kcdama.org for more details.

Speaker: John Ladley
Two Parts: Data Effectiveness & Committees - From seeking approval the right way to keep it going once you do
– In-Person & Virtual CourseJohn Ladley is a highly experienced practitioner, advisor and advocate for organizations looking for sustainable value from information and data. His experience and knowledge is balanced between treating data assets as an essential component of modern business and economies, and the practical solution of business problems.
- John’s books are the authoritative sources for Data and Information Management and Data Governance. He is a recognized authority and speaker on enterprise information management, including data monetization, information and data architectures, data governance, MDM, data quality, BI and Analytics, data warehouse and knowledge management. John is sometimes called the "senior statesman of data." Currently John is semi-retired and works with clients as an advocate for data governance and management and as a mentor to organization leadership.
- "Unofficially" - data and information management is something John didn't go after. It found him. And as digital data becomes woven into the fabric of our existence, John believes we all need to accept a reality where fundamental corporate and organization structures, policies and process will change. Society itself needs to change. This is an anthropological issue. The economic doctrines of Land, Labor and Capital now have a new friend - Data. We are ill equipped for this new age.
You may reach him via email john@ladley.biz or web www.johnladley.com
TOPIC: Data Effectiveness – Are you seeking approval the wrong way?
The quest continues amongst the “data-rati “ - How do we get approval of what we do? Data folks cannot seem to get required recognition and support. We are now starting to deal with “data management has failed” pundits. What is the answer? How do we get data assets to be properly managed?
To do this we need to explore a few things:
- Why do we lose engagement or never get it?
- Are we doing what we can, or have we missed something?
- What are we really trying to do anyway?
From there John will offer some practical steps to acquire true engagement, and data literacy in the process.
TOPIC: Committees (and other annoyingly necessary aspects of data governance)
One of the biggest issues with data management and governance is the inability to keep it going. Nothing seems to stick. What is going on? John will cover the basics of data operation and execution
- How to stop the temptation of creating new positions and organizations
- Essential aspects of program execution that are routinely ignored
- Fear of metrics and measuring
- Maintaining interest
As usual, John will offer some practical actions, and tie the two topics together.

KC-DAMA is excited to bring 5 sensational speakers to you to discuss everything from the technology outlook in Kansas City to how to collect emotional data, from how to handle IT burnout to how data helps with local human trafficking, plus using how data helps to transform society. Our speakers are all using data in creative ways in KC!
Speaker: Kara Lowe, President and CEO of KC Tech Council
Kara Lowe serves as President & CEO of KC Tech Council, a member-driven organization that serves as the shared voice of Kansas City’s tech industry. With nearly 200 member companies spanning from startup to enterprise, KC Tech Council advocates for public policy that helps the tech industry grow, champions meaningful workforce development programs to create a competitive tech talent pipeline, and brings the leaders of the tech industry together to achieve its mission of creating the Midwest’s most competitive tech hub.
Before being named President & CEO in May of 2022, she served for five and a half years as the organization’s COO. Her career prior to that largely focused on leading marketing and promotions efforts for some of Kansas City’s treasured assets and events, like the Country Club Plaza. Currently, she serves on the Workforce Development board for KU Edwards Campus and is a Public Director for the board of the American Institute of Architects. Kara is a native Kansas Citian, a proud Kansas Jayhawk alum, and lives in Brookside with her husband and two children.
- Topic: KC Tech Specs v5
- In KC Tech Specs, the KC Tech Council presents a state of the tech industry in our region. Using workforce and economic data, the report weaves together a story of how KC’s tech industry is growing, how it stacks up against other regions, and what opportunities exist for us to maintain this growth. The KC Tech Council releases KC Tech Specs annually with support from RSM.
Speaker: Grant Gooding, CEO of Proof
Grant got his professional start in mergers and acquisitions working first on the legal side then buy-side analysis, valuations and
transition management. After roughly a decade of analyzing, valuing and transitioning hundreds of small and mid-market businesses, Grant became infatuated with market research, something that he had to work with every day. Grant determined that while valuable, almost all market research failed to address one simple, yet critical question that he needed to answer for his clients: Why are people buying this product or service from your business?
With his MBA emphasis in qualitative research marketing, Grant spent the next several years experimenting with methodologies and measurement techniques that could be used to discover the emotions and motivations behind purchasing intent. After working with a nationally renowned brand analyst, Grant discovered a quant method that could be used to assess brand preferences. With that as a starting point, he and his team utilized some principals of neuroscience and behavioral economics and created a new metadata system that can accurately quantify emotional resonance.
Today, PROOF has executed over 500 market research engagements using its emotional resonance method and stands as one of the most novel, compelling and accurate ways to quantify and understand why customers do the things they do. Grant is an international speaker in the areas of Emotional Market Research and Emotional Data, an emerging field that PROOF is helping pioneer.
Nerdy Fact: Grant is a classically trained vocalist and has performed in venues all over the world including Carnegie Hall, Westminster Abbey and St. Mark’s Basilica. He has 3 amazing children with his wife, Stacey, of over 13 years.
- TOPIC: How to Use Emotional Data for Sales and Marketing
- What if there was a dataset that explained WHY people do the things they do, not just that they did them? What if there was a dataset that could measure the emotions that drive our behaviors? And what if we could use that data to influence or change behaviors? This dataset is called “Emotional Data” and it is the future of marketing, sales and communication. Emotional Data is the qualitative and quantitative measurement of emotions, motivations and preferences that helps explain human behaviors and interactions. In this presentation, you’ll learn what emotional data is, how it is gathered and real examples of its use.

Lark, will share insights about how he’s leveraging publicly available information (data) to increase equity in businesses, jobs, justice and education for citizens in the KC metro and across America.
Speaker: Dr. Rodney Hammer, Founder and CEO of Rehope
My wife and I served as missionaries in Asia and Eastern Europe for 18 years and expanded two humanitarian NGOs to meet indigenous needs. While there, I was exposed to the raw realities of human trafficking. I found its vastness, corruption, and demand overwhelming and seemingly impossible to address.
Simultaneously I wondered why trafficking victims were unable to escape. During a street outreach, my colleague asked a woman forced to sell herself on the street, “Why don’t you just leave?” She responded, “Am I coming home with you? Do you have a safe place for me?”
With her hopelessness seared in my mind and without a solution, we returned to the states for a much-needed break. During this time, we discovered that human trafficking is a major problem in our own communities. With up to two million people being trafficked in the United States and a lack of long-term solutions and safe homes, we founded REHOPE.On a mission to restore survivors, we opened REHOPE Farms, a 17-acre campus offering women long-term housing, therapy, healing and wellness programs, education, and lifelong support. To provide jobs, professional skills training, and reintegration into the community, we launched REHOPE Market & Cafe, a social enterprise of survivor-made products. We also opened REHOPE Youth, a campus for the restoration of victimized children providing trauma treatment, education, family reintegration, and advanced, trauma-informed foster/adoptive services. We have the only facility in the Midwest that accepts boys.
Being an advocate and a strategic partner in this fight, I catalyzed REHOPE University - Center of Excellence in Counter Human Trafficking, which brings together a centralized network of professionals from legal, medical, psychological, prevention, social services, business, law enforcement, judicial, and legislative arenas.
I recently stepped into the Executive Producer role and joined forces with three-time Emmy-nominated producer, Craig Martin, to create a docuseries called Knock: Peering Behind the Door of HumanTrafficking. This series is to bring awareness and create change to the growing pandemic in our own backyard.
- TOPIC: Human Trafficking – Where is it? What is it? How Does Data Management and Training fight it?
- Think human trafficking isn't happening in in your community. Think again! In this presentation you will hear real life emotional stories about how data was utilized to save local victims of human trafficking. We will expose you to the different types of trafficking in the KC metro and debunk the stereotypical images of trafficking victims. Share some of the challenges that law enforcement faces. Learn how enormous human trafficking is and who runs it! Provide tips on how you can identify signs of trafficking and where to turn for help.
Speaker: Eric Lee, Chief Emotional Officer at Mental Health Hackers
Eric Lee is a Solutions Architect at AWS. His focus is in cloud infrastructure and IAM.
Not giving up after being rejected by numerous conferences, he has shared his experience going through IT Burnout to over 30 conferences and companies that span multiple IT verticals.
When not working, you'll find him ridding 4-wheeler's with his daughters, drinking bourbon, or at a dirt track watching sprint cars.
- TOPIC: Surviving IT burnout
- Eric shares – “I've lived through IT Burnout twice and seen it in numerous peers. Keeping it at bay during COVID-19 has been extremely hard. This is my journey with IT Burnout and what you can do to support yourself, family, and peers.”

This is a REAL WORLD session where you can leave with actionable steps, learn more about how others handle the same problems you’re having, plus you’ll get to share your expertise where applicable to help others.
We will be IN PERSON ONLY as this session requires participation and is customized to those in the room to give them exactly what they need. After a delicious hot breakfast and networking, let’s dig in and solve some advanced design issues! This is the kind of session that you’ve always wanted – how to solve those contentious issues with an expert to guide you!
Modules may be voted on ahead of time by participants but could include:
- Are NULLS evil?
- How many are too many joins?
- Who gets the final say in design decisions?
- How long is too long for a naming standard?
- Are GUIDs helpful?
- Is refactoring a help or a hinderance?
- Are all surrogate keys helpful?
- Are data models anti-agile?
- Is a database software or infrastructre or both?
- Which is more important: performance or data quality?
- Is normalization the end of the world?
- Are naming standards just for the wicked?
- Are repeating columns that bad?
- How much security should be in the database rather than the application?
- Are faux NULLS dangerous?
Bring your votes, your debates, your opinions. JOIN US FOR THE FUN (and breakfast)!

Wed15Nov202312:00 pmTRAINING UMBRELLA - 10551 Barkley St. Ste. #102, Overland Park, KS 66212
Speaker: Len Silverston - Data management, data governance, data modeling thought leader and fully ordained Zen priest and spiritual teacher
Len Silverston is a best-selling author, consultant, and speaker with over 35 years of experience in helping organizations around the world integrate data.
He is an internationally recognized thought leader in the fields of data management, data governance, as well as in the human dynamics that lies at the core of synthesizing and effectively using information. He is the author of the best-selling ‘The Data Model Resource Book’ series (Volumes 1, 2, and 3), which provide hundreds of reusable data models and have been translated into multiple languages. Mr. Silverston's company, Universal Mindful, LLC (www.universalmindful.com), focuses on the cultural, political and human side of data management and data governance.
He is also a fully ordained Zen priest and life coach. He provides training, coaching, corporate mindfulness workshops, and retreats through his organization, 'Zen With Len' (www.zenwithlen.com).
Topic: Practical Negotiation Techniques for DG & DM Professionals
Data governance and data management involves a huge amount of negotiating including securing adherence to enterprise-wide semantics, policies and standards, working with projects’ timelines and budgets, agreeing on who has access to what data, and a plethora of other negotiated activities. We cannot be successful in data governance and data management without effectively negotiating.
This seminar will share many practical and essential tools and techniques regarding common data governance and data management scenarios that require negotiations. The presentation will include real life stories of negotiations illustrating how the outcomes from negotiations can make or break a program or project. It will also share some misconceptions about negotiations. For example, the adage, ‘the one who speaks first, loses’ may not always produce the best outcomes, and viewing a negotiation as coming to terms between two opposing sides is not what negotiation is really about. So, you are invited to come to this seminar to cultivate skills that are critical to your success in data governance and data management by learning about the art of negotiation.
This seminar will share:
- Common, likely scenarios where data professionals need to negotiate and how to effectively negotiate in these circumstances
- Case studies of negotiations in data management that led to successful and unsuccessful outcomes
- A framework for negotiation including what to do before, during, and after a negotiation
- Principles for negotiation as well as misconceptions in order to achieve optimal results and avoid mistakes
- Research and studies regarding effective negotiation techniques
- Exercises in negotiations to practice and develop effective negotiation skills

Speaker: Gwen Thomas - Data Governance Pioneer
Gwen Thomas founded the Data Governance Institute twenty years ago. As the primary author of its DGI framework and guidance materials (published at DataGovernance.com), Gwen has influenced hundreds of data programs around the globe. She spent 20 years working in IT shops and providing data management and data governance consulting services, before spending 10 years as an in-house data strategist for the World Bank Group's private sector arm.
Much of her time there focused on translating between executives, program leaders, data governance teams, lawyers, architects, modelers, policy writers, auditors, and data quality teams. While she is a technician, her special focus is on helping non-technical teams become stronger advocates for their own needs. Currently, she provides training and advises projects through the Data Governance Institutes’ consulting arm
Topic: How to Convince the Business You Solve Business Problems
Business Leaders and teams have a common complaint: they aren’t confident that today’s Data Teams understand what they need and are ready/willing/able to deliver what they need. And there’s a lot at stake: Business needs the RIGHT data to drive value, insight, and innovation. Data Teams of course want to solve business problems, and they realize their employment may depend upon it. Both groups recognize the problem is not merely messaging or communicating needs, results, and impacts. Indeed, data and data environments are exceedingly complex, and they’re typically described using jargon and marketing language that is not understandable to business stakeholders who are trying to express their needs.
In this highly interactive workshop, Gwen Thomas (the founder of the Data Governance Institute) flips the current paradigm. Instead of demonstrating the value of various data/tech disciplines (while using technical jargon), she introduces a completely nontechnical framework that defines and organizes data needs, along with criteria for recognizing what “RIGHT data” means. Using a real-life use case, she’ll step through a simple process that extracts and elaborates those business needs, then maps the plain language results to requirements that use descriptors/jargon that are familiar to data and IT teams. Participants will be provided with worksheets they can take to work, to start making a difference immediately.

John Ladley
John Ladley is one of the leading pioneers in the field of Data Governance and Enterprise Information Management. As a consultant, trainer, and author he has over 30 years of coal-face experience dealing with the people and process challenges of putting data to work. John has worked with clients across a range of sectors, bringing a pragmatic set of insights to the management and governance of
data as an asset and the leadership of data-related change and organization transformation.John is also a founder of the Data Leaders’ Organization, a collaborative think-tank of industry experts working to promote good practices in data and information management and data technology adoption.
John’s books include two editions of Data Governance: How to Design, Deploy, and Sustain an Effective Data Governance Program and Making Enterprise Information Management (EIM) Work for Business: A Guide to Understanding Information as an Asset. He is also a contributor to the DAMA DMBOK 2nd Edition. John is a regular keynote speaker at data industry conferences worldwide.
TOPIC: Data Quality, AI, and People
Presented by: Thomas C. Redman “The Data Doc”
Featuring: John LadleyMore than anything else, success with Artificial Intelligence depends on data and people. One cannot do good things with AI without high-quality data and one can’t ensure high-quality data without large numbers of people contributing to the effort.
The first part of the claim, “one cannot do good things with AI without high-quality data” will not surprise anyone. The notion that “one cannot ensure high-quality data without large numbers of people contributing to the effort” may prove enlightening.
We will discuss these ideas in a workshop, starting with some basics, moving to the unprecedented demands AI places on high-quality data, and finally to the roles of “regular people,” those who without data in their title.
The workshop will feature John Ladley, challenging the audience and speaker to think deeply about the implications for the data community and the first steps attendees should take now!

TOPIC: Creative Management of Data Resources
Organizations of all sizes sort of understand data management and governance. Even smaller organizations now face a litany of familiar issues. Resistance, lack of support, rampant data incompetence, huge data debt, poor business alignment, or pressure to make data efforts a “low hanging fruit project. Now layer on AI, advanced analytics, compliance, and the wave of technologies – mesh, fabric, catalog, etc. Then throw in a good dose of societal change, ethics, and gaps in skills. Ick. What is a medium, small, and really, a large organization supposed to do?
The presentation will cover advanced tactics for refining approaches, engaging leadership, ensuring sustainability, and crafting a solution for your organization. We will cover some techniques for being creative and go over some new ways to look at old issues. It is based on John’s 30 years of standing up effective data governance programs.

For more than 40 years, Peter has learned from working with hundreds of Data Management practices in more than 30 countries. Among his 12 books are the first on making the case for data leadership (CDOs), the first focusing on data monetization and modern strategic data thinking, and the first to objectively specify what it means to be data-literate. International recognition has resulted from these and a (pre-Covid-19) intensive worldwide events schedule.
Peter also hosts the longest-running Data Management webinar series on dataversity.net. Before Google, before data was big, and before Data Science, Peter founded several organizations that have helped more than 200 businesses leverage data – specific savings have been measured at more than $1.5 billion. His latest venture is Anything Awesome.
TOPIC: Data Warehousing Capabilities - Deploying to Support the Business
(For this session Peter will not only be virtually talking to the larger DATAVERSITY community but will be presenting in person at Training Umbrella. For our virtual attendees we will provide that DATAVERSITY link for the first half of this meeting)
12:45PM for Introductions 1:00PM - 2:30PM Presentation
Whether your data warehouse is in the cloud or not, it nevertheless likely contains lots of well-organized data. Periodically, it is useful to interact with your Data Governance group to reevaluate the relative value of the various collections in the warehouse. More and more organizations are using warehousing as a strategy and focusing less on the actual technology. This program will provide a refocus on warehousing as a capability that: supports BI activities, enables more effective business analyses and decision-making, and provides some contribution to innovation initiatives. What are the capabilities required and how does their operation compare to cloud-based options?
2:30PM - 3:00PM Networking Break
DAMA exclusive networking event where you will get a chance to get to know others in the data community.
3:00PM - 5:00PM AI-Handle Me with Care
Everyone needs an AI talk on 2024. Mine is focused on AI from a systems perspective. AI has suffered repeated highs and lows resulting multiple, well-known AI-Winters. This short talk, briefly touches AI’s original purpose, the causes of multiple, well-known AI-Winters, significant ethical concerns and consequences, and finishes with a response from Bob Dylan.
